The Mill: An Interview with Stanley Scott

Back in 2013 I set out to film a documentary that would get me to the award shows. I sold my car to buy gear to make my vision come to life. I had great ambition, and drive. However, gear, ambition, and drive, do not a documentarian make. I was inexperienced and a little foolish. Shortly after having started, the reality of what making a documentary entails sobered me. Rather than hitting “pause”—which requires maturity—I went for the “stop” button.

Since then, the footage that I managed to record has been stashed away. I have felt regret and embarrassment for having involved folks into my project and not having produced a result.

Recently, one of my best friends suggested that lately I have been digging myself out of ashes—I could not agree more. This video has departed entirely from my original idea. It is no longer about my ambitions and dreams for recognition or notoriety. This video is about a story that I love, of a family that I call friends, in a place that has my heart.
